Adoption is sometimes difficult to talk about. Honesty is always the best policy. Being honest with children and explaining things in a way that they can understand, in whatever stage of development they are in, is important. Sometimes adults overthink the explanation. You can't go wrong with the truth, worded in a warm and caring manner. We all want to know where we came from and children who are adopted are no different. The less mystery the better. Even if children have heard the explanation before, the subject will emerge again at various times in their lives. As children grow and mature, the explanation can be more detailed. Younger children just want an answer that they can comprehend.Sometimes when you read a book with a young child, questions will emerge about themselves. Whether your child was adopted or not, Yip- Yuck Day is about celebrating family and embracing our beginning and our here and now.Jessica's parents had always been honest with her and had told her that she was adopted and that they were very lucky to have her in their lives. One day, while cleaning the attic, her sister, the biological child of her parents, finds pictures of her mother pregnant with her. These pictures stir up feelings in Jessica who doesn't have the same pictures of her beginning. Jessica has many questions and mourns not having the same keepsakes as her sister.
