WW1 Airfield to City Suburb. Meadowhead, Norton, Greenhill

The WW1 Airfield to City Suburb book describes some of the changes that have taken place in the area now known as Meadowhead, Norton Sheffield S8. It is difficult to believe what the modern day Meadowhead was like at the beginning of the twentieth century, and how the coming of WW1 and the defence of Sheffield would have such a lasting effect. What was a rural farming landscape with grand houses on the fringe of Derbyshire and Sheffield, became a hive of industrial activity during WW1. After WW1, the area had altered greatly; these changes continued and increased in the years that followed. This book has been written by members of the RFC Airfield Research Group who are continuing to discover how the effect of siting a WW1 airfield in this area continues to have an impact today, and of the Landscape Heritage Research Foundation (who conceived the idea of the projects and received Heritage Lottery support to develop the studies to date).
