Landing on the beach at Peleliu in 1944 as a twenty-year-old new recruit to the US Marines, Eugene Sledge can only try desperately to survive. At Peleliu and Okinawa - two of the fiercest and filthiest Pacific battles of WWII - he witnesses the dehumanising brutality displayed by both sides and the animal hatred that each soldier has for his enemy.
During temporary lapses in the fighting, conditions on the islands mean that the Marines often can't wash, stay dry, dig latrines, or even find time to eat. Suffering from constant fear, fatigue, and filth, the struggle of simply living in a combat zone is utterly debilitating.
Yet despite horrendous conditions Sledge finds time to keep notes that he would later turn into a book. Described as one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war, With the Old Breed tells with compassion and honesty of the cruelty, bravery and deaths of the men he fought alongside, and of his own journey from patriotic innocence to battle-scarred veteran.

Much praise has - rightfully - been given to this book. And I can't add more to what has already been said and written about it. What I can say is that it is one of those books that leaves me with a lasting impression I can only recommend it as a 'must read' to any who study the Pacific War - any war, for that matter - as a reminder that 'War is brutish, inglorious, and a terrible waste' (Page 317) and to carry out most of the overall land war strategy was the 'boots on the ground', the rifleman.

Eugene Sledge skriver om sine oplevelser i WWII, som soldat i Stillehavet, hvor han deltager i nogle af amerikanernes hårdeste slag mod japanerne. Det er en umenneskelig krig, hvor alle parter hader hinanden og man møder/giver ingen nåde – man dræber hinanden med en vildskab og fanatisme, som er helt uvirkelig i forhold til andre slagmarker i WWII. Dem, som ikke dør i krigen, bliver mærket for altid på sjælen og må døje med ubehandlede traumer resten af deres liv. Det er grusom læsning med mange detaljer, skrevet i et letlæseligt sprog, som gør hele beskrivelsen rimelig autentisk. Bogens beskrivelser af krigen bidrog også til Tv-serien `The Pacific´, som har været vist flere gange på tv – den er desværre ikke så god, som `Band of Brothers´. Jeg vil ikke sige, at jeg var underholdt, for dertil var historien for barsk, men den er ærlig og realistisk i sin beskrivelse af, når krig er aller værst. Bogen burde være obligatorisk læsning på militær skoler rundt omkring i verden, så kunne det være, at verden blev et fredeligere sted.
