However, he was from a poor family without extra money to spend. Through determination and hard work, he is able to save money to get two pups, Little Ann and Old Dan. Together the trio becomes inseparable and becomes known in the Ozark foothills to be the finest hunting team in the valley. Glory and victory were coming to them, but sadness waited too. Close by was the strange and wonderful power that's only found when he sees "the red fern grow".
