The residents of Whisper Creek are preparing to attend one of the town's biggest social events of the year. With snow still on the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, guests gather at the picturesque Alpenglow Baptist Church to watch Skylar Washington, the owner of Black Bear Books, marry her long-time beau, Reece Mackey. Everyone is waiting for the beautiful bride to walk down the aisle, but instead of the musical notes of the bridal march, a blood curdling scream fills the sanctuary.

When Reece's stepmother, Nora, is found dead right before the ceremony, Skylar asks her friend and landlord, Theodora Murphy, to help her find out what happened. Well-versed in family dysfunction, Theo begins her investigation thinking nothing can surprise her, but she soon realizes that the Mackey family all had each other's backs ... and that a few of them carried very sharp knives.
