Beskrivelse

War in Florida is a first person narrative about the Second Seminole War. Second Lieutenant Woodburne Potter served with Major General Gaines. He was wounded at the battle of Camp Izard.

Lt. Potter tells us about the lead up to the war. The Seminoles were unable and unwilling to comply with the Treaty of Payne's Landing, which compelled them to remove to the west. The mounting pressure between the Seminoles and the Indian Agents, and the negotiations for their removal, are eyewitness reports. He admires the bravery of the Seminoles, and sympathizes with their grievances. However, when the conflict breaks out, he serves bravely. He tells of the battle where Major Dade lost his life.

At times it reads like something from Cormac McCarthy or Herman Melville. Lt. Potter gives a straight narrative intermixed with dialogue, letters, and first hand testimony.

This is a new edition of the public domain book that was published originally published in 1836.

This new edition includes:

Several woodcuts from the time period, detailing camp sites, troop movements, and landscapes. Also included in an appendix is a letter written by President Thomas Jefferson, on Indian Policy, that is illustrative of the Federal Government's approach to native tribes. His approach prefigured the approach that President Andrew Jackson took with the Seminoles in this conflict.Lastly, we included a broadsheet newspaper article containing many first person narratives of civilians who survived the Seminole attacks on farms and ranches. These are riveting and have never been published before in book form.Several footnotes illuminating references made by the author.New format, layout, typesetting.

Bulkington Book's mission is to build a bridge into the past, before film, television, copyright, and internet swallowed up the world. We found this story worthy of revival, and we hope you find it worth your while.
