A North Sea oil platform is a dangerous place - the isolation, the machinery, the constant battle with the elements... and the people. When Safety Officer Ally Baxter's workmates decide he's gay, an evening onshore turns ugly as they indulge in some drunken queer-bashing. Later, his body is found on the route they followed. For Jack Carston, the case seems simple enough, but a second body turns up and things get more complicated. His investigations aren't helped by the fact that he's facing a disciplinary charge and having to cope with the mistakes and machinations of an inexperienced officer under his command. Then his investigations uncover evidence of what looks like a plot to wreck the platform itself...
