Beskrivelse

Labor of love; anthological works of a reluctant master is a book in the creative genre. The title presents the reader with poetry and short stories in two separate parts. While most of the poems are founded on real emotional experiences, the author clothed them in befitting apparels for the beauty of the English languages' sake. The choice of words makes the poems easy to read while not sacrificing on the intended content. Even though love is the subject matter central to most of the poems, there are a number of poems that present a social commentary on a number of issues; religion inclusive. The short stories set in the East African region, present us with issues that are dear to inhabitants of that part of Africa. They are designed to bring to the surface subjects that are mostly hushed among the communities in this region for fear of being ostracized for going against the grain. Take an example of elaborate burial ceremonies among the Luhya and Luos. When you are bereaved, you are also bound to spend all your savings feeding people who come to "comfort you". The short stories provide us with fictional characters who are however dealing with real issues in the communities in which the story is set. Dunia, a protagonist in "The Village Vagabond" for instance, is given the roll of being the "social mirror": exposing the rot within the society from the view point of a man who has nothing to loose and who doesn't therefore give a hoot as to what others think of him. What other "civil minded" persons may have reservation at manifesting or speaking, Dunia does it for them. Labour of Love has been penned for a period of over 2 years before finally being dispatched to the publisher. It has therefore gone through numerous edits by the author himself. His objective being to present to you, the consumer a fairly polished copy without loosing the original meaning that is quite often a possibility with regards editing of poetry.I recommend the "Labour of Love" to teachers in high schools and mid level colleges who may be seeking a kind of text book that can be used to introduce analytic analysis of literary work: one that is captivating enough to draw the attention of most learners and yet filled with adequate imagery to provoke critical thinking. What is more? The learners will be able to pick a number of lessons in the construction of sentences in English language for daily usage either in formal or informal settings.
