The View from the Cross

One of the enduring legacies of the Revised Common Lectionary is its ability to draw different parts of scripture together to form a coherent narrative, drawing congregations from around the world into the life-changing message of faith in Jesus Christ. Each element of the lectionary brings its own point of view into this message, giving us insights into its origins, the impact on its original hearers, as well as its relevance for our lives today. In the gospel message, we see the drama of Jesus' life and ministry and are challenged to join in it.

"The View from the Cross" brings us back to the central image of our faith, the death of Jesus on the cross followed by his victorious resurrection. Drawing on the gospel readings in the Lent and Easter seasons, Dr. Clarke offers a new perspective on the journey of Jesus to Jerusalem and ultimately to Golgotha and the cross. In examining the words and deeds of Christ during this season, we as the church of today can grow in our faith and set out to fulfill the plan God has for us today.

Rev. Dr. John W. Clarke is the pastor of the First Congregational Church of Meriden, Connecticut. He was educated at Thomas Edison State College, Bangor Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and Providence College and Theological Seminary (D.Min.). He is certified as a field education supervisor for Yale Divinity School as well as in geriatric pastoral care. Before pastoring in Meriden, he ministered at Congregational churches in the Connecticut communities of South Britain and Stratford. His previous publications with CSS include "Father, Forgive Them" and "Toward a Hope-Filled Life." He and his wife have one son.
