Lauren is a young girl from Kentucky who dreams of leaving small town life to travel the world. Her travels as a student take her to Europe having many relationships along the way. Her affair with a journalist leads to a life as a single mom in Washington, DC. She advances in her own career travelling in Eastern Europe with an international non-profit organization until she meets and subsequently marries a Russian astrophysicist student, Dimitri. Lauren steps back from her career as Dimitri is accepted to Harvard Business School where she begins to lose her own identity as a Harvard wife.
