Beskrivelse

The study of music has long oscillated between objectifying analysis and evocative interpretation, yet one of the most profound ways to understand music is through the lens of lived experience. This book undertakes a phenomenological approach to Congolese rumba, exploring it not merely as a collection of rhythms, melodies, or performances, but as a medium through which human consciousness, emotion, and culture are experienced, shaped, and transformed. Phenomenology, in this context, seeks to articulate the textures, temporalities, and affective resonances of music as it is encountered in the body, mind, and social space. By privileging the first-person perspective, this approach illuminates how Congolese rumba operates simultaneously as an aesthetic phenomenon, a cultural artifact, and a site of intersubjective connection, revealing insights into both music and human experience at large.

My own engagement with Congolese rumba has been both personal and sustained. Since first encountering the music in 1997, I have immersed myself in its rhythms, lyrical intricacies, and performative gestures, tracing its evolution from the urban dance halls of Kinshasa to global stages. Early exposure to the genre provided a profound, almost visceral understanding of its emotional power, its capacity to move bodies, hearts, and minds in ways that transcend language and geography. This long-standing engagement has been further enriched by direct encounters with its leading practitioners. A vivid memory remains of being introduced to Koffi Olomide on the podium during a concert in Liège, following the release of his seminal album Effrakata. Standing in that shared space of performance, the music pulsing through the air, it became unmistakably clear how live interaction with musicians provides dimensions of experience inaccessible through recordings alone.

Over the years, I have attended countless concerts by both Koffi Olomide and Fally Ipupa, observing not only the musical structures and virtuosic skill of the performers but also the subtle ways audiences engage, respond, and co-create the musical moment. These encounters have provided an indispensable grounding for a phenomenological study, demonstrating the interplay of rhythm, gesture, lyric, and communal energy that defines Congolese rumba as a living art form. They reveal the ways in which music can structure temporal attention, evoke emotional landscapes, and foster social connection, illustrating phenomenology's central concern with lived, embodied experience.

This book is the culmination of a career-long intersection of philosophy, psychology, and musicology. As a scholar trained in both philosophy and psychology, I have sought to integrate rigorous conceptual analysis with empirical understanding of human cognition and affective experience. Philosophy provides the conceptual tools to articulate the structures of consciousness, perception, and meaning, while psychology offers insight into the cognitive and emotional mechanisms underpinning musical engagement. The phenomenological method bridges these domains, enabling a holistic examination of Congolese rumba as both an aesthetic object and a lived experience.

The goal of this work is therefore twofold: to provide an academically rigorous, phenomenologically grounded study of Congolese rumba, and to convey the lived richness, intensity, and meaning of the music as it is encountered in real-world contexts. It is intended for scholars, musicians, and thoughtful listeners who wish to engage deeply with music as a human phenomenon, appreciating both its structural sophistication and its affective power.
