Prologue:The sound of the uneasy restlessness in the darkness of the wild horses woke Levi from her nearly relaxed sleep after a long hard day of driving the wild horse herd across Yellowstone Park. The horses are pacing more, snorting, and letting out distress whinnies, rearing and stomping their hooves to the earth while moving as if something is pushing them or causing uneasiness. Levi reaches for Checker, realizing he isn't lying next to her; she jumps up and grabs her worn, dusty cowgirl boots and pulls them on when suddenly she hears the roar of a mountain lion and the thundering of horses' hooves, which shook the ground under her feet. She hurriedly unzips her tent with trembling fingers and starts yelling for Checker. Extremely worried he is not answering her; not knowing that he is already on his horse and chasing after the wild horses with Hank, her grandfather, right on his tail to help the ranch hands round them up and bring them back to the grazing land where they were resting for the night. Levi grabs the lead rope to her horse Trey, unties him, and she yells for CJ to keep an eye on his little sisters and stay put at camp. She jumps up on her gelding bareback and takes off into the darkness with only the light of the 3/4 moon to lead her in the direction she hears the horses running towards. Her mind is racing, and her heart pounding, not knowing where Checker is and if he is alright or caught within the stampeding horses.
