Beskrivelse

Enter a vanished and unjust world: Jackson, Mississippi, 1962. Where black maids raise white children, but aren't trusted not to steal the silver...

There's Aibileen, raising her seventeenth white child and nursing the hurt caused by her own son's tragic death; Minny, whose cooking is nearly as sassy as her tongue; and white Miss Skeeter, home from College, who wants to know why her beloved maid has disappeared.

Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny. No one would believe they'd be friends; fewer still would tolerate it. But as each woman finds the courage to cross boundaries, they come to depend and rely upon one another. Each is in a search of a truth. And together they have an extraordinary story to tell...

Virkelig fantastisk roman!

5 stars! I loved The Help so much; it’s like nothing I have ever read, it’s going straight into the favorites category. The book has a very realistic viewpoint of Mississippi in the 1960’s, not that I have much experience on the topic, but I fell for it… The Help touches heavy subjects such as segregation of whites and colored, racism and the difference of rights between races. But on top of these heavy subjects of racial differences it has so much more to offer, it’s about family, sorrow, acceptance, life, death and so much more. Despite all these heavy topics this book is very easy to read and really, really enjoyable! “Easy to read, hard to put down”, I heard someone say. The Help will make you cry, but it will also make you laugh and feel things that I don’t have words for. Read it, I say. The book has three different narrators and all of them are so beautifully crafted and realistic. Each narrator has her own language and personality; I almost believe that these are real people. The characters are my favorite elements of this novel, because I cannot fathom how Stockett managed to create three such different personalities with their separate voices and languages, I am thoroughly impressed and humbled by her unbelievable skills. I want more from Kathryn Stockett! The different narratives made it very easy to sympathize with the characters and very hard not to. We got three different views on their actions and it was amazing! I loved the last part of the book called Too Little, Too Late, where Stockett tells of her childhood in Mississippi and her own experiences with a black maid practically raising her and her siblings, revealing her own ideas of black people as a child, which she now repents. But she also expresses the love she felt for the black woman she grew up with, which, I think, makes the book that much more interesting and realistic. I feel that it must have been very hard to write The Help with her background and personal experiences on the subject, but that just made me love the book even more. When looking through reviews, I found that a lot of them addresses the subject of Stockett attempting to portray a black woman, two actually, and it seems a lot of people has a problem with it, because of the stereotypical personalities she has thrust upon her characters. But I don’t see what is wrong with this? So many of the white characters are very stereotypical as well, but I haven’t seen anyone complaining over this… The Help is fiction and though it is very realistic and I feel it heavily on the feels, it is no more than fiction. I wish people would stop freaking out about this or even commenting on it, because most fiction books are written by authors who have not been in the situation of the characters that they are portraying, so why is this any different? Are you looking to find racism? Lastly I want to say that I really enjoyed the movie as well, good stuff!

An extraordinary story about how willpower can unite people beyond race and status. It shows us all how we can be if we dare go across the invisible lines of apropriate behavior. It brings forward tears for all the people who at the time put their precious lives at danger for equal rights for all people. It is a beautiful story that is thoughtful, delightful and enjoyable.
