Bessie Cubbon is surprised and disappointed when she learns that Andrew Cheatham isn't going to be staying in the holiday cottage next to her home on Laxey Beach when he visits the island in February. For the next week of cold case unit meetings, he's decided to stay in a hotel in Ramsey. It isn't until the first meeting that Bessie learns the reason why.

Police Inspector Nathan Fuller has come to the island with Andrew, to work with the unit on one of his cold cases that has always troubled him. It's bad enough that he's keeping Andrew away from Bessie. He's also rude and bad-tempered. Before Bessie can dig too deeply into Nathan's case, though, she's promised to help Elizabeth Quayle advertise her party planning business at a wedding showcase event in Douglas.

Elizabeth's former boyfriend, Andy Caine, is there with his fiancée, Jennifer Johnson. Tensions are high, and things go from bad to worse when Jennifer suddenly disappears right after the showcase.

Can Bessie help locate the missing woman? Can she convince Andy that Jennifer is wrong for him? And can she find time to help the cold case unit work out what really happened to Owen Evans, ten years after his murder?
