Beskrivelse
Mesak R. Kekasih was born in 1984 in Sangihe Besar Island of Indonesia. He now lives in Denmark where he has graduated as Master of Science in Nature Management. Mesak has always tried to understand the forces and impacts at the coastal environment. In this book Mesak shares his knowledge about the environmental lessons from the indigenous wisdom of Seke fishing practice in Sangihe Archipelago in Indonesia. The Seke fishing practice was declining due to the strong intervention from the local Christian church and government that required locals to exploit and convert their traditional custom to modern enterprise. Fisheries in the Sangihe region has been poorly managed since then leading to overexploitation and economic losses that especially affect its local fishing communities. This book is trying to understand what the current state of Sangihe’s fisheries is and to give ideas to the improvement of both management and potential policy seen from a sustainable perspective. The book brings you through environmental anthropology and ethnographic research related to Seke fishing and the research is based on numerous ancient references, from which some are in ancient Sangihe language.
