Ireland, Spike Island prison, 1919:

Barely an adult, Goorthy is led from battle to a sightless, soundless dungeon, punishment for his bravery in fighting for Ireland's freedom. From there he will plot escape and revenge on British soldiers. And he will collect the thoughts of his compatriots in an autograph book.

This work of historical fiction depicts the words and actions of the real Goorthy, Sean McCarthy, the Irish hero. At age sixteen he fought in the 1916 Easter Rising and he dedicated his life to freeing Ireland. Fate twists Goorthy through war, prison, deportation, and drink. The reader is both drawn to him and repelled. Will he change course before he is ruined? 



Goorthy's actual autograph book from Spike Island, as well as the understanding of family members, provides insight into the man we come to know through his tale of history: Goorthy, the Irish hero.
