Following the death of her husband, childless widow Bridget King makes up her mind to leave the Amish life and explore the world. Resolved that her late husband was the last person she would ever love, she is ready to enjoy life with her painful past behind her. In need of a man about the house to help while she works overtime in order to save up money for her journey, she enlists the help of Jacob Lapp, a newcomer with a troubled past of his own. Jacob reveals that he is under a ban in his old village. Bridget agrees to keep his past a secret, and the two soon fall quickly in love. Then, when a mysterious woman outsider arrives in town looking for Jacob, Bridget realizes that the man she loves may not be the man she thought he was. And Jacob must strive to overcome the demons from a life that is just beginning to catch up with him.
