Den historiske udvikling, før bogens hovedemne, er ringe beskrevet, og afviger fra mere troværdige bøger. I hele bogen lægges der vægt på det aktion-prægede, sensationelle, uansvarlige, så hovedpersonerne virker som en flok børn der leger med farlig radioaktivitet - var det virkelig sådan? Med deres barnlige konflikter om hvem der opdager hvad, kan vi så være sikker på, at de overhovedet har opdaget noget? Og når Hoffman og Hofmann er to forskellige personer, kunne man så ikke bruge mere end efternavnet? Der er en del der trækker ned, men det er stadig en god bog, der er værd at læse.
