El siglo XX se fue y se llev? consigo ambiciones sentenciadas al olvido. Morimos con las ?pocas que se extinguen, / inventamos edenes que no existieron . Transcurrimos en el tiempo que nos consume hasta que caemos en cuenta de que nunca logramos explicarnos el gran enigma / de estar aqu? un solo largo instante entre el porvenir y el pasado .

In the poems of Jos? Emilio Pacheco, wrote Octavio Paz, the triumph of nature over culture is exalted--and in exalting it, he transfigures it, turning it into word.

The twentieth century faded, taking with it ambitions condemned to oblivion. "We die with the eras that vanish, / we invented Edens that never were." We drift through time as it consumes us, until we realize we never truly managed to "make sense of the great enigma / of being here for one long moment between the future and the past."

Jos? Emilio Pacheco wrote the poems gathered in Siglo pasado (Desenlace) (1999-2000) at the close of the millennium. In them, he distilled the final breath of an era he had seen both rise and crumble--a world of aspirations extinguished, weighed with both glory and disillusionment. "I failed. It was my fault. I admit it. / But I ask neither pardon nor indulgence: / That's what I get for attempting the impossible."
