Captain Keith Scott has presented his pedigrees in a clear and concise form, "adhering rigidly to genealogical details. ... He has produced a book which is of very great interest, not only to all the families concerned, but also to all students of Border History, and to genealogists in general. The histories of the titled and principal landowning families are included in works such as Peerages and Burke's 'Landed Gentry,' and are accessible to the public, but there are numerous other families, with pedigrees just as long and as interesting, and it is in these that the great interest of this book lies."

Genealogies have been divided into three parts, "with an additional part for families that are probably connected with the main branch but of which the exact connecting link is lost." Part I: Being Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Scott, third Laird of Rankilburn (Buccleuch); Part II: Being descendants of John Scott, brother to Robert Scott, third of Rankilburn; Part III: Being descendants of Michael, brother to Richard, who married Alicia de Molla; Part IV: Being sundry families probably allied to families included in Parts I., II., and III., but of which the connecting link has been lost. An appendix, illustrations of family crests, and an index to surnames and places enhance the text.
