Beskrivelse
Boone Tyler is only 12 when his mother dies, and he believes his Kiowa father killed her. She made him promise to stay in the white world, no matter what. He promised her grave that he would kill his father in vengeance for her death.
So he runs from his mother’s death, finding ways to evade capture by the Kiowa as he grows. Boone takes his Shakespeare with him, as part of his promise to his mother to stay white. He tries to find his grandfather, the general, an Indian killer, but instead was captured by men who tried to make a slave of him.
On his adventures in the western territories as he grows, Boone is assisted by a mysterious voice in his head he calls Sam -- an instinct for survival. He is also puzzled by the strange symbols he draws and finds people along the way who help him interpret them. Sam tells him that he must find out the truth about his father before killing him. He must learn to understand his other half.
Boone’s adventures on his own take him through slavery and the Civil War, running with buffalo and away from his wife, who was never meant to have children. He finally realizes his dream ranch of breaking horses, while learning into manhood what it really means to be a “half-breed.” Will what he learns be enough to keep him from killing his father?
