I was just trying to translate a book,

not open a portal to another world.

One minute I was at home, working on an ancient tome written in a language no one had ever seen. The next, I was being yanked into a glowing forest, tackled by a broody man, branded a traitor, and thrown into the middle of a rebellion I didn't ask to join.

And it was all his fault.

Zephyr Blackthorn.

Leader of the Shade.

Infuriating. Pompous. Mysterious.

And, unfortunately, unfairly attractive.

Maybe if he'd bothered to communicate instead of vanishing every time I asked a question, I wouldn't be in this mess. The only thing he has told me?

I'm Nor'kai.

A Riftborn.

Whatever that means.

All I know is, the people of this world don't want me here. And Zephyr has made it painfully clear he agrees, even as he trains me to become the very thing they fear.

At least I have Finn, his far more reasonable twin brother, on my side. But it's Zephyr who's pulling the strings.

I just want to go home.

Back to my bed. My blankets. My normal life.

Is that really too much to ask from this strange magical world?
