The contributors of this volume adopt a multidisciplinary approach to the problematic of rural development in Senegal and in Africa. They outline the various rural development policies of several African states, and in this context consider the critical questions of the exodus of the rural population to the cities, migration, changing demography, and the challenges associated with economic decentralization. The studies illustrate how agrarian reforms and liberalization have been largely ineffective due to the socio-cultural constraints that are hindering rural development. As a whole, the book represents a comprehensive overview of strategies appropriate to achieving successful participatory development in rural Senegal.
