From prehistoric Folsom Man to Jicarilla Apaches and Utes, conquerors and marauders, fur trappers and traders, farmers and ranchers, soldiers and gold miners, lumbermen and railroad builders, this book tells the stories of the pioneers of northeastern New Mexico. It was originally published in the Springer Tribune as a series entitled "Colfax County Sketches." The author, Lawrence R. Murphy, was a well-known historian and writer who authored dozens of books and articles on the history of the American West. But some of his most endearing and enduring work is contained in this short compilation of historical sketches. This updated edition includes the entire text of the original out-of-print version, with the addition of dozens of historical photos, maps, and illustrations.
