Following the fifth commandment: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you" (Exodus 20:12). One may ask, what constitutes obeying, honoring, and loving one's parents? The answer lies inside this text. Should children willfully and unquestioningly accept their parents' authority, treat them with respect, appreciate and love them unconditionally, and provide for them when they become senior citizens and cannot fend for themselves? Another question that one might ask is, what if their parents are engaged in dishonorable activities that contravene the commandments? What should they do, especially if they are adult children? Again, the answer lies inside this text. Should children be forever obligated to their parents no matter what because their parents gave them life? If the child should choose to disparage their parent, will it contravene God's covenants and second-guess God? If, for whatever reason, parents are hard to honor, does it mean they have lost or never had admirable qualities or hone behaviors that are ignoble or sinful?
