Alchemists have succeeded in creating a dome in medieval Berlin, within which time no longer progresses and which grants eternal life to the inhabitants of this place. Adrian is responsible for maintaining the dome - he regularly has to bring something from the outside world at present time into the dome to keep it stable. Adrian is forced to be subject to the despot Roland Eichenthurm, for if he resists, Eichenthurm will deprive his mother of the privilege of eternal life within the dome, exposing her to aging and death. Adrian's highest goal is to protect his mother at all costs.

In present-day Berlin, Adrian meets Liv and learns that the soul extraction necessary to maintain the dome, which he performed on her father years ago, has caused great harm. He feels guilty and doubts the rightness of his actions for the first time and wants to make amends. Together they come up with a plan to retrieve the father's soul extract for his recovery. With Liv's help, Adrian is able to escape from Eichenthurm's influence for the first time.
