Xavier, a 25-year-old writer, and his twin sister Scarlet, live an almost-painfully normal life in Massachusetts - until Xavier accidentally lands himself in a mental institution, where he learns his parents have been kidnapped by a crazed fan of his books.

With the police unable to help and the threats to their family mounting, Xavier and Scarlet realize they must do this on their own. When all clues lead back to Murkywater, their childhood hometown, things get weirder by the minute.
