This volume explores the intellectual background of Paradise Lost, with particular emphasis on problems of characterization. Character is fate, but it is also moral choice; and the nature of that choice plays a determining role in Milton's epic action. To analyze the principal actors in his epic, one must see them in their proper context, in the light of the Renaissance ideas of the heroic Ethos and Milton's own practice elsewhere--in Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes.
