A writer awakens in a spacious room with large windows giving onto the sea, a soothing white room that he cannot leave. As he soon discovers, he is in a psychiatric hospital in Greece. He remembers nothing, but in his night table he finds a manuscript explaining how he got there. He had been in Athens, trying to track down a set of old documents protected by a pair of sinister brothers and talking about death with a street person dressed in a philosopher's toga despite the winter weather. When at last the writer recovers, his psychiatrist tasks him and an old friend to research an ancient and persecuted religion that believes in the transmigration of souls. As he starts wondering about the possibility of eternal life, the love of a young woman named Ja?n threatens to unbalance even the soundest mind.
