Beskrivelse
This book is the third in a series evaluating underexploited African plant resources that could help broaden and secure Africa's food supply. The volume describes 24 little-known indigenous African cultivated and wild fruits that have potential as food- and cash-crops but are typically overlooked by scientists, policymakers, and the world at large. The book assesses the potential of each fruit to help overcome malnutrition, boost food security, foster rural development, and create sustainable landcare in Africa. Each fruit is also described in a separate chapter, based on information provided and assessed by experts throughout the world. Volume I describes African grains and Volume II African vegetables.Table of ContentsFront MatterINTRODUCTION1 BALANITES (Desert Date, Lalob)2 BAOBAB3 BUTTERFRUIT (Safou, Bush Mango)4 CARISSA5 HORNED MELON6 KEI APPLE7 MARULA8 MELON9 TAMARIND10 WATERMELONVolume III part 2 Wild FruitsINTRODUCTION1 AIZEN (MUKHEIT)2 CHOCOLATE BERRIES3 CUSTARD APPLES4 EBONY5 GINGERBREAD PLUMS6 GUMVINES7 ICACINA8 IMBE9 MEDLARS10 MONKEY ORANGES11 STAR APPLES12 SUGARPLUMS13 SWEET DETAR14 TREE GRAPESAppendix A: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF PANEL MEMBERSAppendix B: CREDITS
