Hostage to Silence tells the journey of Brady Wright, a nonverbal autistic young man who, through typing at age 13, finally revealed his poetic voice. 



Nice to have you reading my secret words. For years in silence, I have watched the world from a dormant life of observation. I hear through the sounds of chatter and pick out word by word. I hear sounds of nature like orchestras of harmonious creatures seeing their story. My writing is me opening you up to my corner of the world and singing a story of loss, hope, freedom and triumph.



Born from Brady's depths of despair, highest of highs, and every emotion in between, this book spanning nearly five years is a gift for everyone and every family touched by autism. Through his poetry, Brady shatters myths that individuals with autism are obsessed with self, devoid of feeling, and lack empathy. His insights provide a compelling argument against a belief that "low-functioning" autism is defined by intellectual disability and lack of theory of mind.



Brady pairs his poems with artwork from Gentry Groshell, a friend who is also nonverbal and autistic. She began her communication journey by expressing herself as an abstract artist on canvas. 



Gentry paints with her heart and emotions. I believe my book shows just that as well. She is kind so she is the perfect choice.
