The future in a catastrophic world that is highly radiated by the nuclear bombs, spirits called the Noor mingle with the remaining human population. There are good Noor spirits that are partnered with to enable the humans to breath the polluted air and eat the eradiated plants that remain. There are bad Noor that will grand their humans extra powers but eventually take over their minds. The persons holding a good spirit are called Holders. Those that have accepted a bad spirit are called Catchers. These spirits give their hosts extra powers but eventually take over their bodies. The relationship between a Noor and a human lasts for a lifetime. Lyra meets a strong human Noor that wants to change the order of the relationship between humans and Noors. Lyra and her new human Noor, named Kalani, slowly workout a relationship of equals. Together they devise a plan to overcome the power of the powerful but evil mayor of the town. The mayor is overcome. Kalani reveals a secret that changes Lyra's life. Kalani is the combination of her mother and father. Lyra has tears of happiness as she, for the first time since her childhood, is able to happily say Mom, Dad, I love you.
