Beskrivelse

Higher Learning in Britain examines the remarkable progress and transformation of British universities in the wake of World War II. Spurred by widespread educational reforms in elementary and secondary schooling, British universities underwent significant introspection to address national and cultural challenges brought about by wartime sacrifices. While maintaining their traditional independence, universities reassessed their roles in light of emerging societal needs. This study, informed by the authors unique perspective as an American academic and visiting professor at the University of London, provides a comprehensive, objective account of British higher education during a pivotal era of change. Focusing exclusively on university-level education, the book explores the role of higher learning in British national life and examines educational theory, practices, and ideals against the backdrop of the countrys social, economic, political, and cultural conditions. By drawing almost exclusively on British authorities, the study seeks to present an authentic portrayal, offering critical commentary grounded in observed inconsistencies rather than personal bias. Through an expository and analytical approach, it provides essential historical context while revealing the interplay between tradition and modernization in British universities, offering valuable insights for understanding their evolution in a post-war world.
