Dave Ashmead was an honest, hard-working, small rancher who wanted to keep peace in the valley, but he was stuck in the middle. As far as the nesters were concerned, he was a cattleman and not to be trusted. But to the combines, he was considered no better than a nester -- taking up valuable rangeland they wanted, and probably a rustler. He could see valid points to both sides as well as faults on both sides and knew things could be worked out if everyone would be reasonable. But sometimes, the only way to restore peace is to bring out the guns and crack a few heads. If they insisted on a fight, he'd be ready.
