Hanged for a Sheep surveys crime, detection and the treatment of criminals in bygone Derbyshire during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The Derbyshire material is firmly and clearly set in the national context of changing attitudes to the various aspects of crime and punishment. The text is enlivened by the very full use of illustrative documentary evidence, most of which has never been previously published. There is illustration from contemporary sources and modern photographs of buildings and artefacts still in existence. Many of the criminal cases quoted were used in the BBC Radio Derby Series 'Records of Crime'.
