Gotter, Tempel Und Kult Der Judao-Aramaer Von Elephantine

The documents, contracts, lists, and ostraca recovered from the settlement of the Judeo-Aramaeans on the Nile island of Elephantine and the accompanying archaeological evidence provide unique insight into this community's culture in the 4th to 6th centuries BCE. These rich primary sources are also of great value to scholarly research into the emergence of Old Testament texts in the 5th century BCE. The present work focuses on the gods, temples, and the cult of the Judeo-Aramaeans of Elephantine through an application of exegetic, historical-critical, and archaeological methods. Primary and secondary sources are studied in their own right and no attempt is made to harmonize the non-biblical evidence with biblical texts in order to provide as varied a perspective as possible on emerging Judaism.
