English summary: With the archeological excavation of the Autobahn exit ramp near Glienke in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, scholars are able for the first time to investigate thoroughly a Slavic castle mound, which dates from the 9th-10th century. A considerable area of the adjoining outer-settlement has also been excavated. These archeological discoveries offer the possibility of gaining extensive information about the habitation and economic structures of a middle-Slavic fortress complex and to assess more closely the social connections of the inhabitants of the castle to the inhabitants of the outer settlement. The archeological and scientific results of the excavation of the castle-settlement complex of Glienke are presented in this volume, which has significant meaning not only for the settlement history of eastern Mecklenburg, but also for the study of west-Slavic culture between the Elbe and Oder rivers. Above all, the complete excavation of the castle mound has made possible a detailed and incomparable view into the settlement-structure of a Slavic castle-complex. On the basis of archeological, historical, and scientific evidence, the aristocratic and economic functions of the population residing within the castle can be assessed, and the reasons for the construction of so-sizable a castle structure in the 9th and 10th century are also discussed within the context of the wider region of Slavic settlement. The cultural and habitation history in particular helps to address the historical development of regional tribal settlement, especially of the Slavic Redarier tribe in eastern Mecklenburg, in the region between Lake Tollensesee and the Uecker River, the region in which the castle of Glienke was founded in the 9th century. German description: Mit den archaologischen Ausgrabungen im Vorfeld des Autobahnbaus bei Glienke, Lkr. Mecklenburg-Strelitz, konnte erstmals in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ein slawischer Burgwall des 9. und 10. Jahrhunderts vollstandig untersucht werden. Daruber hinaus wurden auch grossere Areale der anschliessenden Vorburgsiedlung freigelegt. Dies bot die Moglichkeit, umfassende Erkenntnisse zur Siedlungs- und Wirtschaftsstruktur einer mittelslawischen Burganlage zu gewinnen und die sozialen Verhaltnisse der Bewohner des Burgwalles und denen der Vorburgsiedlung naher zu beurteilen. Mit dem vorliegenden Band werden die archaologischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Grabungsergebnisse des Burg-Siedlungskomplexes von Glienke prasentiert, die nicht nur fur die regionale Besiedlungsgeschichte im ostlichen Mecklenburg, sondern auch fur die Erforschung der westslawischen Kultur zwischen Elbe und Oder von grosster Bedeutung sind. Vor allem die vollstandige Freilegung des Burgwalles ermoglicht detaillierte und kaum vergleichbare Einblicke in die Siedlungsstruktur einer slawischen Burganlage. Auf Grundlage von archaologischen, historischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Quellen konnen herrschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Funktionen der in der Burg wohnhaften Bevolkerung beurteilt, aber auch die Ursachen fur den enormen Burgenbau im 9. und 10. Jahrhundert in weiten Teilen des slawischen Siedlungsgebietes diskutiert werden. Der kultur- und besiedlungsgeschichtliche Blick richtet sich dabei vornehmlich auf das historisch uberlieferte Stammesgebiet der slawischen Redarier im ostlichen Mecklenburg, vor allem auf die Region zwischen Tollensesee und Uecker, in dem die Burg von Glienke im 9. Jahrhundert gegrundet wurde.
