Die Terrakotten aus Assur im Vorderasiatischen Museum Berlin

English summary: The terracottas recovered by the Deutsche Orient Gesellschaft at the Assur excavations at the beginning of the 20th century, and which came to the Museum of the Ancient Near East in Berlin after the division of the finds, are here presented in their entirety. They comprise almost 1900 pieces, about half of which consist of anthropomorphic figurines, with a further third consisting of representations of animals, furniture, and chariots. The terracottas from Assur occupy a special position among the assemblages of finds from Mesopotamia, as they cover the period from the middle of the 3rd millennium BC to the Parthian period of the 3rd century; the Hellenistic period is not represented for historical reasons. Contrary to the more widespread practice in Mesopotamia, they were mainly handmade and thus show a greater individual variety in types than is usual in mold production, which was used in Assur for only a small part of the finds. The presentation of the terracottas from one of the most important sites of northern Mesopotamia in a detailed catalogue with comments and new photos from a variety of angles will form the basis for further research on this find category and for comparative studies. German description: Die nach der Fundteilung in das Vorderasiatische Museum in Berlin gelangten Terrakotten aus den Grabungen der DOG am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in Assur werden nun in ihrem Gesamtbestand vorgelegt. Es handelt sich um knapp 1900 Stucke, die etwa zur Halfte aus anthropomorphen Figuren, zu einem weiteren Drittel aus Darstellungen von Tieren sowie von Mobeln und Streitwagen bestehen. Die Terrakotten aus Assur nehmen unter den Fundkomplexen aus Mesopotamien eine besondere Stellung ein, da sie den Zeitraum von der Mitte des 3. Jahrtausends v.Chr. bis in die parthische Periode des 3. Jahrhunderts abdecken, die hellenistische Epoche ist aus historischen Grunden nicht vertreten. Sie sind entgegen der in Mesopotamien verbreiteteren Praxis vorwiegend mit der Hand hergestellt worden und weisen somit grossere individuelle Vielfalt in den Typen auf, als dies bei der Formproduktion ublich ist, die in Assur nur bei einem kleinen Teil der Stucke genutzt wurde. Die Vorlage der Terrakotten von einem der wichtigsten Fundorte des nordlichen Mesopotamien in einem ausfuhrlichen Katalog mit Kommentaren und neuen Fotos in verschiedenen Ansichten bilden die Grundlage fur die weitere Forschung zu dieser Gattung und fur vergleichende Studien.
