Europe's first professional woman of letters, Christine de Pisan was a fifteenth century French poet and author, whose prolific and diverse works include courtly poems, biographies, philosophical treatises and proto-feminist texts. Her masterpiece, 'The Book of the City of Ladies' combats medieval beliefs about women by creating an allegorical city.
