Daniel Owen's The Township

A modern Translation by best selling writer Robert Lomas of Daniel Owen's first Welsh novel about life in the small north Wales town of Mold around 1881. This is the first time this novel has been published in English.

It starts : "Dear reader, I would not like you to think that our Township is a worthless, deprived, and destitute village. If that were so, I wouldn't want to write about it, and you wouldn't want to read about it. We have some seven thousand souls in our Township. However, incomers from Liverpool or Manchester say they are coming down to the "country", and they return up to "town." When I hear them speak so, it annoys me. But if they knew how I felt about my town I suspect they would be kinder in their assessment."

There follows a saga of twenty-five chapters about this un-identified town, its people, their characters, their hopes, their fears, their sufferings and their triumphs. All chronicled by a young inhabitant known only by the initials L.N.M.
