Sex offending is nothing new; it has existed since the beginning of time. Historically, strategies for dealing with those who committed sexual offenses were ignored or based on punishment that ranged from castration, ostracism, imprisonment, or even death. It was not until the later part of the 20th century that the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and research started seriously studying sex offending and sexual offenders. The focus of these disciplines was to understand and stop this behavior. As with any field, the beginning can be primitive.
