Harold Case is a middle aged gentleman without charm, without family, without stamina, and above all, without imagination. A man to whom adventure would not normally come. But it does come to Harold Case, for he is the ideal man for a rather particular job. He is sent to rescue someone who is lost in his own model railway. The task proves trickier, and more time consuming than anticipated. Whatever Harold Case may achieve, he comes out of the situation a completely different person.
