Lane is a seventeen-year-old who is accustomed to her life of stability and predictability. Having recently taken over as the leader of her father's delivery team, she is excited to travel and see the continent of Maran, so long as she has a plan to follow.



Twenty-year-old Alec is a mercenary with a carefree attitude and a love of ale that often gets him into trouble. On the surface, he's anything but serious, but his troubled past - paired with his line of work - keeps him from making deeper connections with people.



When the two chance an encounter, they quickly learn they can't stand each other, but they're drawn together by an inexplicable force. As Alec embarks on a mission to track down his missing mother, Lane finds that her fate is tied to his in mysterious - possibly even magical - ways. Now, she must discover just how deep their connection goes, and the two must decide how far they are willing to go to protect one another as they grapple with whether the relationship they form is of their own free will or fate.
