Bengal District Gazetteers Purnea

Much of the information contained in this volume has been reproduced from the Final Report on the Survey and Settlement operations in Purnea (1901-1908) by Mr. J. Byrne, I.C.S. The volume presents the generic information about Purnea relating to the natural divisions, river system, climate and temperature. It describes about early history of the region and enumerates various Governors of Purnea under the Muhammadan Rule. It also specifies details of the Nepalese War. The Gazetteer notes that there were several principal castes in the region, such as Sheikhs, Goalas and Telis.Main languages of the region were Maithili and Bengali.The book details about the agricultural statistics, principal cropsFood crops and Non-Food crops, extension of cultivation and pasturage. Chief occupations of the people were manufacturing Bidriware and gunny bags, cotton weaving, blanket weaving, and Nepal trade. History of Indigo industry has also been included, elaborating on the relationship between planters and raiyats, manufacture, and indigo-seed growing.
