Bengal District Gazetteers Palamau

The account contained in the volume has been compiled mainly from the Statistical Account of Bengal, Volume XVI, by Sir W. W. Hunter; from the Reports on the Settlement of the Government Estate by Mr. L. R. Forbes and Mr. D. H. E. Sunder; and from materials supplied by the local officers. The book presents the general description of the region, hill system, river system, fauna, climate and rainfall. It includes information about the early history, the Chero conquests, the Chero rule, the Mutiny of 1857 and formation of the district. It also tells about the density of population, migration, distinct religions, and aboriginal races of the region. It details about the vital statistics, principal diseases, infirmities of the region,and also about the vaccinations available during that period. The Gazetteer states that forests were reserved under administration protection. It describes about the extension of cultivation and irrigation in the region, including construction of Bandhs and wells.
