Much valuable information in compiling this volume has been obtained from the Final Report on the Survey and Settlement of North Monghyr (1905-1907), by Mr. H. Coupland, I.C.S. The volume gives a detailed description about the district of Monghyr, which includes its natural divisions, hill system, hot springs, river system, Geology, Botany, Zoology and Climate. It tells about the early history, Muhammadan rule, Kasim Ali Khan's rule, the White Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny and Archaeology. The Gazetteer discusses the growth of population, language, religions, principal castes, economic conditions, village officials and social institutions. It describes about the tracts of fertility, irrigation facilities, principal crops grown, extension in cultivation. It highlights a number of Famines and Floods that had hit the region. It further tells about embankments, such as railway emb a nk me nt s an d privat e embankments, and their effects.It states that the chief manufactures of the region were railway workshops, slate quarries, mica mines, indigo manufacture, tobacco manufacture and iron work.
