The subject of confession evidence has been neglected for a considerable period of time by both psychologists and legal theorists. This work is an attempt to rectify this discrepancy. The reader is introduced to the methods, theories and concepts of psychology which are concerned with the area of confessions. In particular, it focuses on police interviews with suspects, and juries' reactions to the presentation of confession evidence in criminal trials.

This work is organised into three chapters. The first chapter examines the legal definitions of confessions and the part they play within the criminal justice system in England and Wales. The second chapter covers the controversial area of police interviewing of suspects. In particular, readers' attention will be drawn to the psychological aspects of why people confess, and how juries react to confession evidence in criminal trials The final chapter is a Case Study, in which all the areas of concern covered by the work are viewed in context.
