Beskrivelse

Genetically modified animals embody an innovative technology that is transforming world through biomedical, environmental and food applications. Genetic modification of an animal involves altering its genetic material by adding, changing or removing certain DNA sequences in a way that does not occur naturally. With advances in the field, new technology emerged that did not necessarily require transgenesis, recent applications allow for the creation of genetically engineered animals via the deletion of genes, or the manipulation of genes already present. To reflect this progress and to include those animals that are not strictly transgenic, the umbrella term 'genetically engineered' has been adopted into the guidelines. It also brings with it concerns over intellectual property, and patenting of created animals and the techniques used to create them. Genetic engineering technology has numerous applications involving companion, wild, and farm animals, and animal models used in scientific research. This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex theories and principles in the field. It focuses on various aspect of genetic modification of domestic animals for agriculture and biomedical applications. It is designed to provide understanding of issues such as genetic diversity and evolution of marine animals isolated in marine lakes, genetics in domestic animal reproduction and recent advances in genome editing-based gene modification in pigs. It also focuses on genetic engineering and cloning, hox genes and toxins from venomous animals. Some of the diverse topics covered in this book address the varied branches that fall under this category. For all those who are interested in animal genetics and breeding, this book can prove to be an essential guide.
