Beskrivelse

"Murakami is like a magician who explains what he's doing as he performs the trick and still makes you believe he has supernatural powers . . . But while anyone can tell a story that resembles a dream, it's the rare artist, like this one, who can make us feel that we are dreaming it ourselves." -The New York Times Book Review

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 -"Q is for 'question mark.' A world that bears a question." Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame's and Tengo's narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell's-1Q84 is Haruki Murakami's most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

A phenomenal novel! Murakami is a mesmerizing storyteller, at times reminding me of my favorite Danish author, Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen), one of the greatest storytellers of all time in my view. At one point in this work, he even quotes several pages from "Out of Africa." Very powerful indeed to me! 1Q84 is the extremely fascinating story about a young woman who drops into an (only slightly) alternate reality filled with "little people" who build "air chrysalises" to create "mazas" and "dohtas" so they can rule the world through the use of certain people acting as "perceivers" and "receivers." Around the same time a young man decides to help rewrite for publication a novel written by a mysterious 17 year old girl, which sets in motion a string of events he could have never foreseen. 1Q84 has several themes. It is about the damage that cult religion can cause in children as well as adults, about violence against women and its consequences, regrets about paths not taken out of fear, and ultimately it's about loyalty, dedication, true love, loneliness, and cats. To name a few. I felt extremely connected with the themes and the characters throughout this brick of a novel. Even the peripheral characters are immensely interesting; like the dowager, the ugly snoop, the gay bodyguard, the beautiful police woman, the tiny nurse, etc. There is lots of suspense and lots of reflection, and a short story within the story (Town of Cats) that is one of the highlights of the entire novel. I LOVED this book and could hardly put it down. That being said, I did find the story a tad drawn out at times, too much repetition in the 2nd and 3rd parts, and I believe the book could have been shortened somewhat. However, this takes away very little from the overall story and I still am giving it 5 stars because it is THAT GOOD and 4 stars is simply not enough.(
